Like pages and groups,instant messaging(IM) is another important feature of facebook to chat live with other friends in facebook.Its a great way to keep in touch with our friends,family members and colleagues in facebook.You are able to chat with others as soon as you logged into facebook.

The chat feature includes two major settings :

1.Friends Lists

2.Options

Friends list: Lists are one of the useful feature in facebook which helps us to organize our contacts in facebook.You are able to create separate lists for family members,friends,collegues and business contacts in facebook.You are able to add upto 20 members to a list.Lists not only helps to optimize the chat in facebook but also helps us to send bulk messages to the contacts in the list.


Options: The options has six sub-settings

• Go offline
• Re-order lists
• Pop out chat
• Play sound for new messages
• Keep online friends window open
• Show only names in online friends

Now lets go to the point. If you have 500 or 5000 friends in facebook,then its difficult for you to chat with particular group of people in facebook.So organize your contacts with the lists feature,creating lists for:

Your family members and relatives
Your real life friends
Your co-workers
Your business contacts
Facebook restricted to add only 20 people in a list because just to avoid spam.Now go to the facebook chat,Mouse over the friends list and select the lists that you want to appear in your facebook chat.Ignore the lists that you don’t want to chat via IM.You are able to change the options in this feature often as you wish.Now in the chat window you are able to see the contacts listed under a specific list which you created.You are able to be appear online and offline to any list of friends you have selected.By this simple feature,we are able to be in online mode without getting disturbed by others.
